PHOENIX, AZ – Yesterday, the Boston Globe reported two brothers from South Boston ambushed a 58-year-old man as he slept outside a Dorchester MBTA stop, targeting him because he is Hispanic. One of the brothers said he was inspired in part by GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump. “Donald Trump was right, all these illegals need to be deported,” he allegedly told the police.” In response to the rise in anti-immigrant sentiments, the Dream Action Coalition has issued the following statement:
“Donald Trump’s extreme rhetoric is translating into hostility towards Latinos, and the attack in Boston is just one example. Another is the fact that both myself and Cesar Vargas have seen a sharp increase in abusive emails, and now they are starting to include death threats,” said DRM Co-Director Erika Andiola.
“The Republican Party needs to be more active in controlling their party’s message as they are ultimately responsible for reeling in the members of their party. This time the crazies were worked up, it was an assault. Next time it could be much more tragic.” said Cesar Vargas, Co-Director of Dream Action Coalition.
“We have always received hate mail from extremist for being Latinos and undocumented, but since Trump’s rhetoric towards immigrants started escalating, it has become much more intense. Seeing this happening in Boston is starting to really alarm many of us.”
“I just don’t think Trump, Steve King or the GOP in general see the horrific consequences that their portrayal of us, undocumented immigrants, can have in our community.” said Erika.
